Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my files when I shut down the computer?

On a regular disk, the files are gone along with the disk. On a startup disk with “Keep files between launches”, RamDisk saves them to the SSD before the computer shuts down (on a Mac, also when the app quits) and restores them the next time it starts. While it runs, files are also saved on a schedule and before sleep, so after a sudden power loss you only lose what changed since the last save.

What is worth keeping on a RAM disk?

Anything that is rewritten often and that you don't mind losing: the TEMP folder, the browser cache, npm, pip, Cargo and Gradle caches, your project's build folder, Xcode's DerivedData. Documents, photos and anything you have only one copy of are better left on the SSD.

How big should the disk be?

Start with the size from a template: 2 GB for TEMP, the browser and npm, 8 GB for developer caches and DerivedData. After a day, open “Usage History” - it shows how much the disk actually used and the size that would have been enough. You can resize a disk without losing files (on Windows, an NTFS disk).

Does an 8 GB disk take up 8 GB of memory right away?

No. Only the files written to the disk take up memory. The exception is macOS 15, where a disk reserves its full size right away. You can see how much is in use on the disk's tile and in the bar at the top of the app window.

Should I keep caches between launches?

There is usually no need to keep the browser cache or Xcode's DerivedData: they fill up again quickly. Package caches are better kept, otherwise packages are downloaded again after every restart.

Why won't the browser folder move?

A folder with open files can't be moved. Close the browser and try again. The same goes for editors and other apps.

Is the app really free?

Yes. You can install Exlade RamDisk on any number of your computers, virtual machines and servers, at home or in your organization. No license key, sign-up or payment is needed.

Do I need administrator rights?

On Windows, you need administrator rights once, to install the driver and the service. On a Mac, you don't. On Linux, the installer asks for your sudo password.

What does the app send over the internet?

Once a day, RamDisk asks www.exlade.com whether a new version is out. Nothing else, and nothing about you or your disks. You can turn the check off in the settings.

How do I uninstall the app and get my folders back?

Moved folders go back to their original place when the disk is ejected. On a Mac, before uninstalling, choose “Reset…” in the settings: the app ejects its disks, puts the folders back and deletes its settings. Step-by-step instructions for each system are on the uninstall page.

Is there a version for iPhone or Android?

No. Exlade RamDisk runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
