Encryption

An encrypted disk keeps only ciphertext in memory.

  • On Windows, XTS-AES-256 in the RamDisk driver; on a Mac, built-in APFS encryption (AES-XTS), the same as FileVault.
  • Each disk has its own random key. It is stored only if the disk keeps its files.
  • Copies of an encrypted disk's files on the SSD are encrypted too.
  • You can make a disk accessible only to you, not to every user of the computer.

When to Encrypt

Encryption protects the memory the disk occupies and its copies on the SSD. Turn it on for disks that may hold passwords, keys, personal documents or customer data.

Build caches usually don't need encryption: an encrypted disk is slower. A browser cache can hold pages you opened after signing in, so if others use the computer, it is worth encrypting.
